Following the installation of a remedial damp proof course, residual moisture will dry out, but the presence of mineral salts, some of which may be hydroscopic, within the existing plaster may continue to give problems such as continued wetting of the wall surface and surface crystalisation.Salt contamination will cause damage to plaster, possibly resulting in crumbling and disintegration.

Not all plaster affected by rising damp is contaminated to the level that it has to be renewed and it may be advisable to wait until after a suitable drying out period before taking action.

Treatment: Where plaster has to be renewed a special salt retardant formulation must be used to hold back any residual salts while still allowing the wall to 'breathe'.
