Walls
and floors in rooms below ground level are subject to lateral and hydrostatic
water pressure and therefore at risk from damp. However with modern waterproofing
methods basements, cellars and vaults can be transformed into habitable
accommodation. This can add considerable value to any property.
Damp
results in unhealthy buildings which may lead to respiratory problems.
Damp also provides the conditions for wood rotting fungi to develop.
Treatments:
Cementitious
Multi-Coat Render
This
system employs up to 5 coats of a render containing a waterproofing agent
in a dense sand and cement mix. It is suitable for most types of brick
and concrete structures. The preparation of the wall surface is critical
to provide a sound key for the first coat. Special provision must be made
for waterproof fixing pockets to avoid puncturing the lining.
Cavity
Drainage Membrane
An
alternative to the traditional cementitious render is the installation
of a high density extruded plastic membrane which is mechanically attached
to walls, ceilings and floors but allows an air gap for the free movement
of water vapour.
Preparation
is minimal making installation quick and cost effective. Internal finishes
can be either direct plastering or plasterboard on to battens.
